Greener Solutions

Mar 05

KAI Design attended an interesting day of workshops and conferences presented by Canopèe’s called Practical tools to become green and contribute for an eco-friendly paper market; that took place at the UQAM on February 12th.

At this conference we learned about many ways to present our clients with ecological solutions for their printing needs. We became more knowledgeable about solutions on recycled papers, alcohol-free inks and ecological printing machines (non-alcohol dampener, less ink consumption, oil-less bearings and the adoption of new spray powder). These measurements prevent environmental pollution and yield a major reduction in paper wastage, contributing to the conservation of paper resources.

An interesting fun fact we learned: Happy Potter book series are the greenest books EVER!! Saving over 130,000 trees!!

Overall, the conference provided us with practical tools to initiate a turn towards environmental papers and also strengthen our abilities to intervene and to motivate our suppliers and clients to be more ecological.

A wonderful rebrand of Molson Canadian beer!  The new logo radiances Canada-pride!  Love the texture that is used on the maple leaf design. It is rich and detailed.

Molson Canadian is a brand of 5% abv pale lager brewed by Molson, the Canadian division of Molson Coors Brewing Company.

ReBranding Gone South

Feb 10

The other day while driving thought the city we noticed that Mikes Restaurant had changed their logo.

Not sure if this is an improvement, I can see that their past logo had an 80’s feeling, but found the new logo’s typography kind of weak. Got the feeling that maybe the client “forced” the logo designer to add drop shadow effect on the word “Mikes”, and also to add gradient background….lol

People should know this…drop shadow and gradient effect on a logo is VERY passé!!  Unless its done in a very Web 2.0 way….

However, we have to admit that they did a good job with the circle on the back, as well as the beige, green and red colors, which relate to food. Perhaps even a hint of “healthy” food with this new color scheme.

Would we say this is an upgrade from their previous logo?  Not very likely.

But in a positive note…at lease this rebranding project can be served as a great design course materials for “Rebranding gone bad” for all future design students.

Instant Referrals

Dec 10

” You may not be able to choose your family, but you sure can choose whom you do business with!”

Recently I am reading this “funny” book about “Instant Referrals” by Bradley J. Sugars – Founder and Chairman of Action International. Personally, I don’t like the tone of the author, the way he wrote the book is as if all the readers are stupid. But I have to admit that he provides some amazing insight about building solid referral business model. There are many useful tips and great exercises that allows the readers to really think about their own business. I guess for that reason, I managed to flip through pages after pages even if he strokes his own ego in almost every page.

“Understand that business is a cyclical phenomenon: As the owner of the business, if you look after your team, they will in turn look after the customers, who will in turn look after your business, which will then look after you!”
